trying to hook a JIC hose up to a JIS port, is this the right adapter?

Built for adapting between standards, it has a male JIC 37 degree flare on one end and a solid female JIS connection on the other, so it is meant for exactly that kind of JIC to JIS hookup.

fitting's a straight shot, right? no angle or swivel to it?

Correct, it runs straight through with no offset or rotation. One end is a male JIC 37-degree flare in 3/4" with a 1-1/16-12 UN thread, and the other is a solid female JIS connection, also 3/4". Solid female means there's no swivel movement on the JIS side, so both connections are fixed in place once installed.
