Does this thing go straight from a JIC fitting to a metric standpipe, or is there some kind of adapter situation in the middle?

Straight connection, no middle pieces needed. One end is a 3/4-16 UNF Male JIC and the other is a 15mm Female DIN Standpipe. The part handles both sides in a single fitting, so you're not stacking adapters to make it work.

trying to hook a 1/2" JIC male to a 15mm DIN standpipe female, is this the right piece?

For that exact mix of ends, it matches up. Side 1 is a 1/2 inch JIC male with a 3/4-16 UNF thread, and side 2 is a 15 mm DIN standpipe female.
