Will this here fitting let me hook up a British pipe thread to a regular ol' American one?

That's exactly what this Adaptall fitting is for; it adapts between BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered) and NPT (National Pipe Tapered) thread types. On one side, it's got a 3/8" male BSPT connection, and on the other, it's a 1/8" female NPT connection.

trying to hook a 3/8 BSPT line into a 1/8 NPT port, is this the right adapter?

It’s meant for exactly that thread change. One end is a 3/8 inch male BSPT (R 3/8 - 19) and the other end is a 1/8 inch female NPT (1/8 - 27 NPTF), and it’s a straight steel fitting.
