trying to figure out if this'll work as a step-down adapter between a 1-1/4" BSPP port and a 1/2" BSPP male fitting, that what this bushing does?

That's the job. The female end accepts a G 1-1/4 - 11 BSPP connection, and the male end is G 1/2 - 14 BSPP, so it reduces from the larger port down to the smaller male thread. Steel construction from Adaptall, straight profile, threads in clean. Pretty standard adapter for bridging those two BSPP sizes in a hydraulic line.

Will this here fitting work to connect a 1/2" male BSPP to a 1-1/4" female BSPP?

Yes sir, it will. This Adaptall bushing is made for just that purpose, to reliably connect those two different sizes of BSPP connections.
