what's the thread difference between bspt and bspp on this fitting, and does it matter which end goes where?

BSPT is a tapered thread and BSPP is a parallel thread. On this adapter, the male end is the tapered BSPT side and the female end is the parallel BSPP side. That difference is fixed, so the orientation is not interchangeable. You would connect the male BSPT end into a tapered female port and the female BSPP end receives a parallel male fitting. Getting those mixed up will cause sealing problems, so it's worth double-checking your port types before you wrench it down.
