what size thread is on this plug, and is it the male end that's threaded?

The threaded side is male, with a G 3/8 - 19 BSPP thread in a 3/8" size. That's a British Standard Parallel Pipe thread, so just make sure the port you're plugging is also BSPP before you order.

trying to plug a port that’s marked G 3/8, is this the right kind of plug or am i mixing up threads

For a G 3/8 - 19 port, the match here is a male BSPP plug with the same G 3/8 - 19 callout. This one is a steel, countersunk sealed plug with a 3/8 inch Side 1 size and BSPP (Bspp) thread type.
