Got a hydraulic line running 5/8" on one end and 1/2" on the other, will this union tie them two together direct, or do I need something else in between?

That's exactly what this fitting handles. One side threads onto a 7/8-14 UNF JIC connection for the 5/8" line, and the other picks up the 3/4-16 UNF JIC connection for the 1/2" line. Both ends swivel, so you can get it seated without having to twist the hoses themselves. Steel construction, straight body, 52mm end to end. No additional adapters needed for that size combination.

trying to hook a 5/8 jic hose to a 1/2 jic line, is this the right union for that?

For stepping between those two JIC sizes, this union matches up as 5/8 inch JIC female swivel on one end and 1/2 inch JIC female swivel on the other. The thread callouts are 7/8 - 14 UNF on Side 1 and 3/4 - 16 UNF on Side 2.
