What size threads does this thing have?

This fitting connects a G 1/2 - 14 male thread to a G 5/8 - 14 female swivel thread, both BSPP.

fitting's got a male half-inch BSPP on one end and a female 5/8 BSPP on the other, that right? trying to step up between two different size ports without adding extra adapters in the line

Correct on both counts. One end carries a G 1/2 - 14 male BSPP thread and the other is a G 5/8 - 14 female BSPP swivel. That size difference is built into the fitting itself, so you can bridge those two port sizes in a single piece without stacking adapters. The straight body keeps everything in line, which helps when your routing doesn't have room for angles or offsets.
