got a hose end that’s 7/8-14 UNF JIC male and the port is R 1/2-14 BSPT female. is this the right little adapter to tie those together?

For that mix of threads, it’s a direct match. One side is a 7/8 - 14 UNF JIC male (5/8 size), and the other side is an R 1/2 - 14 BSPT male (1/2 size), so it’s meant to bridge a JIC connection over to a BSPT port.
