Both sides are BSPT male, so what exactly is this piece doing in a fitting setup? Trying to wrap my head around where it fits in.

Two male BSPT ends on a straight body means this nipple is built to bridge two female-threaded ports or fittings. You thread each end into its own female connection, and the nipple acts as the link between them. Common use is extending a port, joining two female-threaded components back to back, or making up a run where both termination points are already female BSPT.

trying to hook two female BSPT ports together, is this the straight nipple with male threads on both ends?

Built as a straight Adaptall nipple, it has male BSPT threads on both sides, so it’s meant to join two female BSPT connections in-line.
