what's the thread size on each end of this nipple? trying to figure out if it'll step down from 3/4 to 1/2 like I need

One end runs R 3/4-14 BSPT and the other is R 1/2-14 BSPT, so yes, it does step down between those two sizes. Both ends are male, and the overall length comes in at 51.6mm with a 27mm flat width. If your system already runs BSPT threading on both connection points, this should drop right in.

got a 3/4 BSPT port on one side and a 1/2 BSPT on the other. is this the straight nipple that steps down between those two?

Yes, it is a straight steel BSPT male to BSPT male nipple with two different ends. Side 1 is R 3/4 - 14 (3/4 inch male BSPT) and side 2 is R 1/2 - 14 (1/2 inch male BSPT), so it’s meant to connect or adapt between those two BSPT sizes.
