got two ports that are both R 1/2 - 14 BSPT, will this nipple join em up or am i missing something

For tying two matching BSPT tapered ports together, it’s the right style. Both ends are male BSPT with R 1/2 - 14 threads, so it’s made to connect two ports with that same thread callout.

Correct on both counts. Each end carries an R 1/2 - 14 male BSPT thread, so you're working with matching 1/2" taper threads side to side. That makes it a straight-through nipple, no reduction, no crossover to a different thread standard. If both ports you're connecting are BSPT and sized at 1/2", this fitting goes right between them without any adapting.
