Got a system running British fittings on one end and JIC on the other, does this adapter actually go male to male, or is one side a female connection?

Both ends are male on this one. One side is a 1-1/4" JIC thread with a 1-5/8-12 UN callout, and the other is a 1-1/2" BSPP with a G 1-1/2-11 callout. So you'd need female receivers on both ends of whatever you're connecting it to. Straight configuration, no bends or offsets.
