Got a hydraulic line running G 1-1/2 on one end and G 1/2 on the other, this nipple set up to bridge those two sizes?

Yeah, that's exactly what it's built for. One end carries a G 1-1/2 - 11 male BSPP thread and the other runs G 1/2 - 14 male BSPP, so it bridges those two sizes in a single straight fitting. Both sides are male, so you'll need female BSPP ports or couplings on whatever you're connecting it to.
