fitting's got a male JIC on one end and female BSPP on the other -- that 90 degree angle, is that gonna let me change direction right at the connection point or do I still need a separate elbow somewhere upstream?

Right at the connection point is exactly where the direction change happens. The 90 degree elbow geometry is built into the fitting itself, so you get the angle transition and the thread conversion in one piece. No separate elbow needed. The male JIC side is 9/16-18 UNF and the female BSPP side is G 3/8-19, both at 3/8 inch size, so as long as those threads match up on your lines you are good to go in one shot.

What's the wrench size needed for each side of this fitting?

You'll need a 19mm wrench for Side 1 and a 22mm wrench for Side 2.
