these are 90 duro, not the standard 70 -- does that harder compound actually hold up better at higher pressures or is it just a tradeoff for less flexibility?

Harder durometer ratings do give you better resistance to compression and extrusion under pressure, which is why 90 durometer gets specified in hydraulic applications where a softer ring might deform or blow past the sealing surface. The tradeoff is that it requires a well-machined groove and surface finish to seat properly, since the ring won't conform as readily to minor surface irregularities. For higher-pressure hydraulic work, that firmness is usually the right call.
