what's the deal with "right hand spiral" on this clamp, does that mean it won't work if I need to go the other direction?

Right hand spiral refers to the direction the spiral coil winds on the clamp. It follows a clockwise rotation pattern, which is the standard orientation for most hose assembly applications. If your setup requires a left hand spiral clamp, this one would not be the correct fit. For the majority of standard hose clamping work, right hand is what you want.
