Both sides are M18 x 1.5 metric on this thing, so what exactly makes it a "DIN X Metric" fitting if the thread size is the same on both ends?

The thread callout being identical on both sides can definitely cause some head-scratching. Side one is a DIN tube end, which uses a 24-degree cone seat configuration common in DIN hydraulic tube fittings. Side two is a standard metric port end with an elastomeric seal. Same thread size, different end-form geometry. The elastomeric seal on the metric side is what creates the port seal, while the DIN side connects to the tube assembly. So even though both read M18 x 1.5, they're meant to interface with different mating components.
