what does "not preset" mean on this compensator, does that mean I gotta set it up myself before putting it on?

Right out of the box, the pressure setting has not been factory configured, so yes, adjustment is part of the installation process. Load sense compensators like this one need to be calibrated to match the system's operating requirements. Since every application can have different demands, leaving it not preset gives you the flexibility to dial it in for your specific setup rather than working around a fixed value.
