What's the deal with the swivel end? Does it need extra tightening or anything special when you're hooking it up?

The swivel on the JIC end is there to make connecting your hydraulic lines easier. You shouldn't need to overtighten it; just make sure it's snug according to standard JIC fitting practices, and that the 37-degree flare seats properly.
