Product Questions & Answers

trying to swap out an elbow on a hose end. what threads does this one have?
Question by: Shane Y on Sep 25, 2025, 5:43 PM
On the male side it uses NPTF threads, size 3/8-18, built to SAE J476. The other end is a female JIC swivel with a 37 degree flare, size 7/16-20, to SAE J514.

Thread on the male end is NPTF, does that mean it'll seal on its own without tape or compound, or should I still use something on it?
Question by: Harold F on Aug 5, 2025, 2:44 PM
NPTF threads are built to create a mechanical pressure-tight seal through thread deformation alone, so in a lot of setups you can get a reliable seal without sealant. That said, many techs still apply a small amount of thread sealant or PTFE tape out of habit and there's nothing wrong with that, especially in higher-vibration environments. The male end on this fitting is 3/8-18 NPTF per SAE J476, so it follows that standard's sealing intent.

I need to replace a 90 degree elbow fitting... will this one do the trick?
Question by: Joyce A on Jun 12, 2025, 7:09 AM
This 90-degree elbow fitting should work if you're replacing a part with these specs: a male NPTF 3/8-18 thread (SAE J476) and a female JIC swivel 7/16-20 thread (SAE J514).
