thread on the male end is 1/4-18 NPTF -- does that fit standard pipe fittings or does it need something special to seal up right?

NPTF threads are built to seal on their own through thread-to-thread contact, so you don't need a separate sealant the way you would with standard NPT in some situations. The 1/4-18 size is a common pipe thread size, so it'll fit any port or fitting tapped to that spec. Just make sure the mating port is also NPTF and not a lookalike thread standard, since mixing those can cause leak issues even when the threads appear to engage fine.

trying to swap out a fitting, is this one the 1/4-18 male pipe thread to 9/16-18 female jic swivel in a 90?

It’s a 90 degree elbow with a 1/4-18 Male NPTF thread on the B1 side and a 9/16-18 Female JIC swivel 37 degree flare on the B2 side, built to SAE J476 (NPTF) and SAE J514 (JIC) thread specs.
