thread on the male end is 2-1/2-12 ORB -- does that mate up with a standard SAE J514 port, or is there somethin special about how it threads in?

SAE O-Ring Boss fittings follow SAE J514, so the 2-1/2-12 male end will seat into any port machined to that same standard. The o-ring sits on the boss and compresses against the face of the port when torqued down, which is what gives you the seal rather than relying on thread engagement alone. As long as your port is cut to J514 spec at that thread size, you're good to go.
