both ends on this fitting are the same size, 7/16-20, so it's going male JIC on one side and male ORB on the other, that right?

Correct on both counts. One end is a male JIC SAE 37-degree flare and the other is a male SAE o-ring boss, and yes, both are 7/16-20 threads. That combination lets you transition between a flare-style connection and an o-ring boss port without needing an intermediate adapter. Both ends also conform to SAE J514, so you're working within a well-established standard on each side.
