got a JIC 37-degree flare port on one end and an ORB port on the other -- will this straight fitting bridge those two without needing an adapter in between?

That's what this fitting is built for. One end is a 3/4-16 male JIC SAE 37-degree flare, and the other is a 9/16-18 male SAE O-ring boss. Both threads meet SAE J514, so you can go straight from a JIC connection to an ORB port in one piece, no extra adapter needed.

Will this fitting hold up with hydraulic fluid at around 5500 psi?

This 6400-O series fitting is rated for a maximum dynamic pressure of 6000 psi, so it should handle that pressure without issue.

Trying to swap a fitting out, is this one the kind that goes JIC 37 degree male to ORB male?

On the ends, it is a male JIC SAE 37 degree flare with 3/4-16 threads on one side, and a male SAE O-ring boss with 9/16-18 threads on the other. Both ends are called out to SAE J514.
