Does this speed sensor need any kind of shimming or calibration before you put it in, or is it pretty much ready to go right out of the box?

No shimming, no factory setting, nothing like that. It installs without any pre-configuration, which makes field replacement a whole lot less of a headache. The built-in pull-up resistor is already part of the design, so you're not adding external components to get it running. Just wire it up and you're good.

Will this speed sensor work on my older 12V system, or do I need some kind of adapter?

It's designed for direct integration with 12V vehicle systems, operating within a supply voltage range of 8 to 24 Vdc.
