does this thing work with standard NPT fittings or do I need something special on the pipe end?

The pipe end on this coupling is 3/4-14 female NPT, so it threads onto standard 3/4-14 male NPT fittings without any adapters. The connect side uses a push-to-connect ball latch, so that end just needs a compatible male half from the same 5600 Series or another ISO 7241/1 Series A plug. As long as your pipe side is 3/4-14 NPT male, you're good to go.
