Will this fitting work with standard metric tubing, or is there something special about the DIN standard?

It's designed for use with DIN standard metric tubing, specifically M12 x 1.5 connections on both ends.

both sides are M12 x 1.5 on this thing, so does that mean im connecting two of the same size DIN tube lines together, just at a 90?

That's what's going on here. Side 1 is a male M12 x 1.5 DIN tube fitting and Side 2 is a female M12 x 1.5 DIN tube fitting, so you're working with the same thread spec on both ends. The 90 degree elbow shape lets you change direction between those two connections without needing a separate adapter in between. It's a clean way to route lines when you've got a tight corner and both ports are already DIN metric.
