what exactly is the "rod bias" part doing inside one of these Vickers piston pumps? never had to replace one before and just want to make sure i'm ordering the right thing

The bias piston works against the main control piston to keep the pump's swashplate pushed toward a default position, usually full stroke or zero stroke depending on the system setup. Without it holding that spring load, the pump can't regulate displacement the way it's supposed to. It's a wear and pressure item, so needing a replacement after extended service hours is pretty common on Vickers units.
