fitting's 53mm long total, will that be enough to clear both sides of a standard panel when it's mounted through?

At 53mm overall with a 29mm center-to-panel dimension and 10mm of thread engagement on each side, there's enough length for most standard panel installations. The 29mm figure represents the distance from the panel face to the center of the fitting, so you'd account for panel thickness when figuring your clearance. As long as your panel isn't unusually thick, the geometry works out fine for a typical bulkhead pass-through setup.

need a straight bulkhead fitting to pass a line through a panel. is this one actually made for that kind of setup

For running a hydraulic line through a partition, this is a straight DIN bulkhead union meant for panel or bulkhead mounting. It joins two same size DIN tube ends on either side so you get a clean through-panel connection in one compact fitting.
