What kind of material is this fitting made out of, and how wide is it across the flats?

The adapter is made from steel, so it's pretty durable for demanding jobs. The width across the flats is 41mm.

what's the thread spec on the DIN side of this adapter, trying to match it up to an M36 fitting on a piece of equipment we got

The DIN tube connection on that end is M36 x 2.0, male thread. So if your equipment has a corresponding female M36 x 2.0 DIN port, this should line up correctly. The other end is a 7/8-14 UNF male ORB-SAE connection, which is a 5/8" size. Both sides are straight, no angle to account for during installation.

got a hose end with 7/8-14 ORB and i need to tie it into a DIN tube, is this the right adapter?

It bridges a male M36 x 2.0 DIN tube connection on one side to a 7/8 - 14 UNF ORB-SAE male connection on the other, in a straight steel adapter. The DIN side is size L28 and the ORB-SAE side is listed as 5/8 inch.
