trying to match up a union for my DIN tube lines. is this one straight through with M42 x 2.0 on both ends?

both sides on this union are M42 x 2.0 male, does that mean I need a female-threaded DIN tube fitting on each end to make up the connection?

Correct. Each side of this union carries a male M42 x 2.0 thread at S30 size, so whatever you're mating it to on both ends needs to be a female DIN tube connection. It's a union in the true sense, pulling two separate tube ends together at a single point. Just make sure both lines are S30 DIN tube before you go ordering.
