been looking for a split flange adapter that'll hold up around saltwater and chemical exposure, does the coating on this one actually do anything or is it just for looks?

Dura-Kote plating is a real corrosion protection treatment, not a cosmetic finish. It's one of the reasons this adapter shows up in marine, offshore drilling, and chemical processing applications where plain steel wouldn't last. Carbon steel on its own rusts fast in those environments, so the plating does carry its weight.

What kind of environments is this fitting good for? I work at a paper mill, and things get pretty nasty.
