Carbon steel fittings without a solid surface treatment tend to corrode fast in wet or chemically active conditions. The Dura-Kote plating on this one is specifically there to fight that. It creates a barrier that holds up against corrosion and keeps the fitting's integrity intact even when conditions aren't ideal.
