does this fitting work without a mandrel during the crimp process, or do i need special tooling to get it seated right?

No mandrel is required for installation, which takes a fair amount of hassle out of the assembly process. The 4S Series is built to crimp without one, so standard crimp tooling handles it cleanly. That said, make sure your equipment is properly set up for the dash size, which on this one is a -16.
