corrosion's been eating through fittings on our equipment something fierce lately, does this one have any kind of protective coating on it?

Carbon steel fittings do have a reputation for rusting out fast in rough conditions, but this one comes with Dura-Kote plating specifically to hold up against corrosion. It's a step above bare steel and is part of what Eaton Aeroquip built into the 4S series to keep assemblies running longer between replacements.

trying to swap out a fitting, is this one the -16 size and carbon steel?

For fit basics, it’s a -16 hose dash size fitting assembly made from carbon steel. The ends are listed as flanged on one side and line, hose, or tube on the other.
