Carbon steel fittings without any surface treatment tend to degrade pretty fast when exposed to moisture, road spray, or outdoor conditions. The Dura-Kote plating on this one is specifically there to fight that off and keep the fitting from corroding under harsh working conditions. It's part of why the whole assembly is built to extend hose life rather than just get you through a season or two.
