does this fitting need a mandrel to put it on, or can you just press it straight onto the hose?

No mandrel required for this one. It's a permanent fitting, so the installation process doesn't call for that extra tooling step. The 4S design handles the connection without it, which tends to make assembly go a bit smoother on the floor.
