what exactly is this plug used for, is it just to block off a port or does it do somethin else?

Port blocking is the main job here. When you've got an unused threaded port on a hydraulic valve, manifold, or fitting body, you thread one of these in to seal it off and keep contamination out and pressure in. SSP makes solid fittings components, so this is a proper plug, not a temporary cap. If you've got an open port sitting exposed on a system, this is the right kind of fix.

This SSP ST THD PLUG is made of stainless steel, which should hold up well.
