fitting's got a hose barb on one end and male NPTF on the other -- that right? just want to make sure before i order

You got it. One end is a hose barb sized for 1/2 inch tube outer diameter, and the other end is a 3/8-18 male NPTF thread. The NPTF side meets SAE J476 spec, so it'll integrate cleanly with standard NPTF ports without a lot of fuss.

So this is a forged steel elbow... how long is each side of it?

This elbow fitting has an overall length of 2.040 mm, with the secondary length being 1.220 mm.
