been lookin at this for a skid steer application -- does the aluminum housing hold up alright or is that gonna be a weak point in a hard-working machine?

Aluminum housings on piston pumps like this one tend to get a bad rap, but they're pretty well suited for mobile equipment where keeping weight down matters. Skid steers are actually one of the listed applications for this pump, so it's not a stretch to say the housing was built with that kind of environment in mind. The tradeoff with aluminum versus cast iron is weight savings, and on a skid steer that can make a real difference in how the machine handles and what you can carry.
