what's the lowest temp this coupling can handle before it starts giving you trouble?

Rated down to -40 degrees, so cold shop environments or outdoor winter use won't be an issue for it. The Buna-N seal holds up at that lower end, and the brass body isn't going to get brittle on you in those conditions either.

got a grease setup with a 1/4 female NPTF port. is this the right female half, or am i mixin up ends?

You are looking at a female half with a 1/4 inch NPTF end (end size 0.25) on one side and a push to connect end on the other. It also uses a ball lock internal connection and matches US Industrial Interchange and Tru-Flate Interchange patterns.
