these sleeves work for replacing a worn out one in a compression fitting, or do you have to buy the whole fitting again?

Replacement use is exactly what these are made for. When a sleeve gets chewed up or deformed from repeated tightening, you can swap it out without pulling the whole fitting assembly. Just make sure your existing fitting is built around 3/4 inch outer diameter tubing and uses a compression-style sleeve, and this one from Midland Industries should drop right in where the old one was.
