pump says CW rotation, does that mean it won't work if my system runs counterclockwise?

Correct, this pump is built for clockwise rotation only. Running it backwards would cause internal damage pretty quick, so if your power unit spins counterclockwise you'd be looking at a different model altogether. Worth double-checking your prime mover's output shaft direction before ordering.
