runs on AC power, right? or do i need some kind of external rectifier box wired in before it?

No external rectifier needed. The coil has internal rectification built right into it, so it handles AC input on its own. That was a deliberate part of the design for situations where adding extra wiring or components just isn't practical, like on mobile equipment where space and simplicity matter.
