One end is male, the other female, so you can thread it directly into a port or fitting without needing a separate nipple in between. That saves space and cuts down on potential leak points. The 1/2-inch size fits standard hydraulic lines at that thread size, so if your existing connections are 1/2-inch, it should drop right in without any adapter gymnastics.
