got a 1/2 inch npt port but the line i’m tying into is 1/4 npt. is this the right little adapter nipple for that?

That's what this fitting is built for. One end is 1/2 inch NPT, the other is 1/4 inch NPT, so it bridges those two thread sizes in a single piece.
