pump says direction is field reversible -- how hard is that to actually do out in the shop, or is it more of a factory-only kinda thing?

Field reversible means you can swap the rotation direction without sending it back or ordering a different unit. It's meant to be done by the person installing it, not at the factory. That's actually one of the more practical features on this pump since it saves you from having to stock two separate configurations for different setups.
