Will this gear pump work okay in a tractor's hydraulic system?

It's definitely suitable for tractors and harvesters, plus machine tools and steering circuits. You can also use it in compactors, sweepers, and lift trucks.

pump direction being field reversible, does that mean I can switch it without sending it back or special tooling, or is that more of a factory setting kind of thing?

Field reversible means you can change the rotation direction on-site without sending the unit back for reconfiguration. It's built into the Series 26 design so operators and mechanics can make that adjustment during installation or when a system gets reconfigured, which saves a fair amount of time when you're working on equipment that gets repurposed between jobs.
