pump direction on this thing, is it something you can swap in the field or do you have to send it back out?

Field reversible is one of the built-in features on this Series 26, so swapping rotation direction doesn't require pulling it from service and shipping it anywhere. That's a real convenience when you're setting up equipment that needs to run in a different configuration than what you originally spec'd.

reckon this gear pump would hold up on a lift truck running most of the day?

This Danfoss/Eaton Series 26 gear pump can definitely be used in lift trucks, as well as tractors, harvesters, machine tools, steering circuits, compactors, sweepers, rotary and reel mowers, fan drive systems, and auxiliary work circuits.
